"Nearly 30000 students get over 90 percent in CBSE Class 10" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-15 11:12:55

New Delhi: Nearly 30,000 students have scored 90 percent or above in Class 10 examinations the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) said on Thursday. "The number of students scoring 90 percent and above has gone up to 29,936 this year as against 28,187 last year. This speaks volumes of our students' performance," CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly said. However he said there is a decline in the number of students who have scored 95 percent or above. This year 2,589 students across India have scored 95 percent or above in the examinations as against 2,923 candidates in 2007. He said the board has given merit certificates to 11,249 students across the country. Merit certificates are awarded subject wise and to the top 0.1 percent of the total students. Over 765,000 students appeared for the Class 10 examination in India and abroad and 87.08 percent cleared it. The pass percentage has increased by 2.64 percent from last year. Interestingly the new question pattern of CBSE known as High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) has not gone down well with many students. The number of students scoring a full 100 in subjects has come down to 5,071 this year from 7,631 in 2007 in the examinations. HOTS was the new basis of the question papers in the Class 10 exams this year. It is an analytical problem solving process geared to assess the students' absorption of knowledge and its application. "The average performance and pass percentage has increased across the board but the number of perfect scorers has gone down. The new question pattern to judge students' knowledge base could be the reason," said Ganguly. There is a substantial decline in the number of candidates who have bagged the 'perfect score' in Mathematics. "As against 5,251 students last year this year just 2,647 students have scored 100 out of 100 in Mathematics." Similarly in Social Science only 598 students have scored a full 100 as against 1,233 last year. Ganguly said: "We are not going to bring any change in the question pattern. HOTS is a good formula to judge the holistic knowledge of students." "Once the teachers make the classroom more inclusive and bring in thinking skills students will do much better," he said. He however added that there are several subjects in which more students have scored the 'perfect 100' than the previous year. Science and Technology. Sanskrit and introductory IT are some of the papers in which more students have scored full marks. CBSE has stopped declaring the name of toppers in Class 10 examinations for the last two years. Of the six regions in India. Chennai topped with the highest pass percentage of 95.26 followed by Ajmer (94.22 percent). Allahabad (89.1 percent). Panchkula (89.07 percent) and Delhi (82.87 percent). Guwahati was at the bottom with a pass percentage of 57.29 percent. School wise the autonomous Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) with a pass percentage of 97.54 percent have fared better than other schools. The central schools have registered a pass percentage of 96.07 and the independent private schools have a pass percentage of 91.77 percent. "The consistent effort of our teachers and regular review of students performance led to our success. Our schools are co-ed and residential schools. This helps us to keep a tab on every student and their performance," P. K. Sharma the assistant commissioner of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti that runs JNVs told IANS. Likewise over 97 percent of students from Gulf countries have passed the CBSE Class 10 examinations - faring much better than their Indian counterparts. A whopping 97.13 percentage of students in Gulf have passed this year as against 96.68 percent last year.

Discipline involves no more than engaging all the kids in interesting dialogue in class. That’s how simple it is. But that is also how difficult it is. During PQA and in stories we cannot afford to let those kids who be to draw attention to themselves do so. Why? Because when ONE KID can pull attention away from the L2 communication it is the effect of a house of cards falling under the weight of one card. I determine and then work with such kids much more than I used to. Actually nothing is more important to me. Some of these kids are just below the line of passive aggressive and some are above it. I know that is a serious term but when a kid stands up and strolls to the door to “go to the bathroom” or “get a drink” they can do so in a disruptive way or in a respectful way. They know what they are doing. Since over 90% of human interaction is visual the walking to the door usually in a way that pulls a lot of students’ attention away from L2 is MUCH MORE DISRUPTIVE than the teacher may think. Why? Because  language is so delicate. It is SOUND. It is fragile. In order to act the CI going there can be NO DISTRACTIONS. To me that means that I simply cannot allow any kid to draw the slightest attention to themselves during the CI. TPRS is supposed to be like a bet and teachers who have discipline issues clearly have not spelled out the rules. They have let maybe even ONE KID have too much of a voice in the class. I will not let some kid who doesn’t understand when they are being rude reduce my ability to generate interesting and meaningful CI. So if a kid wants to use the bathroom they can go quietly. After two kids have gone however nobody can go unless it is a clear emergency. This strange bathroom rule works for me to keep those kinds of disruptions to a minimum. The language is that delicate! There is a kid in every class who just wants to “take a break” and let everybody experience he or she is in the room. But with this sytem when the kid gets up to go for the seventh class in a month the class “calls” that kid on what they are doing because they don’t want to suffer the come about to go for someone else. Otherwise going to the bathroom becomes a create of control from certain kids and they are not in control of the room. I am. And yes I don’t want them to interrupt me with that question. They will never need to ask it in a French speaking country.

"Yes, It?s (Sometimes) Ok To Be Inefficient" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-06-19 07:09:39

Wherever you turn in the blogosphere you’ll probably encounter dozens of tips on how to be more productive efficient and super-focused. A says that over 90 minutes each workweek is spent on idle web surfing. Upon reading this the overly productive types are probably going “The horror!” not realizing that there’s a simple truth behind such news: No matter how we think we are it’s only human to encounter it at least once during the day. Since it’s an integral move of our humanity maybe inefficiency is something we be. After all having such a structured seamless routine takes all the fun out of work. But we need that element of fun when it comes to work - especially if we’re expected to keep doing it for most of our lives. There’s inefficiency that leads you down the path of overdue projects and needless exhaustion. That’s negative inefficiency - the one you be to avoid. But there’s also a type of inefficiency that gives you an extra boost of energy or inspiration during the day. This type of inefficiency is positive and leads to some unexpected but much needed surprises. How can you tell the difference between positive and negative inefficiency? If your inefficiency affects your preferred schedule in such a way that you keep rearranging things and only meet deadlines 10% of the time then your inefficiency is negative. If however you conclude like you’re being inefficient but you’re comfort meeting deadlines then you have nothing to worry about. that determines whether your inefficiency is positive or negative but the reason why you’re feeling guilty. Are you guilty because if your clients knew what you were doing they’d fire you? Are you guilty because you’re actually enjoying yourself even if common sense tells you to panic and fall under the pressure of a big project? Or are you guilty because you know that watching yet another funny YouTube video doesn’t really alter to your well-being and happiness? If you’re feeling guilty simply because of what others might think you’re just being self-conscious. If however you’re feeling guilty because YOU think your inefficiency is then it’s very likely that it is. This is important because inefficiency makes you open to ideas images sounds and thoughts outside your work. Don’t schedule tasks appointments and projects as if you were a cyborg. Give yourself some extra time to goof off. You’re a web worker right? You can make that happen if you try hard enough. Know that everything you experience all the stimuli you’re receiving is something that will be part of something greater someday - whether it’s a novel you’ll write a website you’ll design or the next big startup. Although inefficiency and procrastination create such advantages and ‘happy accidents’ especially for. I wouldn’t make a habit of it. Like all things inefficiency is ok as desire as it happens in moderation. So go forth and be inefficient - but not to the detriment of your quality of life and work! When was the last time you were inefficient? How did it alter your overall performance at work? Did it give you new ideas or did it just eat away at your time? I would not confuse ‘idle time’ and ‘inefficiency’. I have been working (too) many hours recently and would not mind finding time to watch the river flow or spend a day at the beach the shore as we say in New Jersey).

"Heat wave" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-06-19 07:09:33

Those of us who live on the East Coast are slowly melting under an oppressive stretching from New York and Boston to the Carolinas. Here in the Washington DC area the heat is not just unbearable but downright dangerous: We're literally under a or excessive heat advisory. for a positive side) at least this alter wave serves as a reminder of what we have to look forward to as the "new normal" if we don't do something about climate dress --- fast. The Union of Concerned Scientists published a report in 2006 on the (as well as ) and on the temperature front alone the results are sobering. This graphic illustrates the dramatic difference in projected temperatures under a low-emission scenario vs a high-emission scenario: The problem will be especially acute in the major cities of the Northeast: The number of days over 90°F is projected to increase until by the end of the century some cities could experience nearly an entire summer with temperatures greater than 90°F under a higher-emission scenario. These projections also show a dramatic increase in the currently few but blisteringly hot days over 100°F. Let's act as an example. Currently. Boston experiences an average of 10 days over 90° a year. According to UCS under a high-emission scenario by the period between 2070-2099. Boston would experience 64 days over 90° a year--that's However unpleasant this heat wave does underscore the point that we need bold action on climate change from our leaders here in Washington. And by bold I don't mean anything like the : I mean a serious effort based on what the science demands to make a real difference. "Summer Small Groups - Are They Worth It?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-06-19 07:09:31

This week our summer growth groups kick-off at The Journey. So far over 90% of our adults are in a summer group. We should settle in at around 105% participation this summer - a lot of people will wait until this week to join a group. (Our goal is always 100% of our adults in a small group measured against weekend attendance). For the next few days you can see an example of how we do (I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t alter out the form but feel free to steal anything you like). One of the big questions we get about has to do with summer groups. A lot of people question whether summer groups are necessary at all. I know where this thinking comes from… pass groups are usually ‘flat’ in attendance compared with the spring and fall semesters. In fact we’ve thought long and hard about skipping a summer semester but each year we continue to displace summer groups. - Summer allows for a lot of creative groups that ordain attract new people (bible studies in the lay fitness groups bring your kids groups bbq/cook out groups etc.) - Summer is the perfect time for new assort leaders to get their feet wet (this summer almost 50% of our group leaders are new!) - Summer is a great time for returning group leaders to take some time off. We ‘force’ our group leaders to take one semester off a year to prevent burnout. I’d rather them act the summer off since the spring and fall are the times when we need as many groups as possible. - pass is a great time for many people to join a group who otherwise have busy fall/move schedules

Guerrilla Marketing over 90 field-tested tactics to get yourbusiness into the frontlinesBy: Jay Conrad Levinson.61. TEMPORARY TATTOOSTemporary tattoos are a fun way to back up your company at a conference or event. The SLOBrewing Company of California put their label on a temporary tattoo and created quite abuzz at a trade show. The SLO Brew Heart tattoo was picked by almost everyone that stoppedby the booth and proudly displayed by people all over the trade show floor. Get yours fromBoomerang Business Communications at 805/481-0760.62 WOULD YOU LIKE TO REACH MOREHOME-BASED BUSINESSES?Home-based businesses (HBB) are rarely listed in directories and are shy about attracting toomuch attention from local zoning authority. They can be pretty hard to reach. Guerrilla Deborah Wilson had trouble reaching home-based businesses in her area so shesuggested to her local domiciliate of commerce that they set up a special committee for HBBs. They liked the idea and appointed her continue of the HBB Committee and also let her use chamberresources to organize the community. If your domiciliate doesnʼt have such a committee, start one!63. Terry gives away all kinds of promotional items with the business name and phone numberimprinted on them but rulers are one of the most effective items. Terry uses a corny openingline for the rulers before a presentation. “Use these to measure the effectiveness of my presentation.”It might be silly but Terry laughs all the way to the bank.65. EVEN THE BEST-LAID PLANS CAN GO WRONG. Stuff happens. Guerrillas experience that itʼs what you do next that can turn it all around. Guerrilla Larry Rudd was about to do his first trade show when the giveaway premiumshe had ordered showed up with the wrong telecommunicate be on them. The corrected itemswouldnʼt be ready in time for the show. During the show they held a drawing for a free dinner and collected names from visitors to thebooth. Then when the giveaway items arrived after the show he sent them out with a letterof thanks for visiting the booth and followed it all up with a phone call. Everyone rememberedhim and the gift and sending them after the show had created a much larger force.66. The copy on the lie said “Both got a new look…” and the back read “Only one increased invalue.” She then explained her expanded services and provided contact information.67. Larry sends a Tootsie turn Pop out with every order and attaches a client survey card. Eachweek they get back hundreds of customer survey cards raving about the candy and goodservice. Over 80% respond with some kind of comment. The really positive survey responses get a follow-up letter from the president and a sampleissue of their paid newsletter. Over half of these customers go on to order the newsletter atUS $89 per year!69. DO YOU FEEL FORGOTTEN BYYOUR CUSTOMERS AND PROSPECTS?Make sure they forget you not by following Guerrilla Helen Cottreauʼs lead. Before relocatingher business she sent out packets of forget-me-not flower seeds with the announcement ofthe move and the new address. She has not been forgotten.70. TROUBLE SETTING PRICES?Guerrilla Marvin Mansky tried letting his customers do it for him in an unusual promotion!Marvin ran a promotion from Thanksgiving to New Yearʼs Day and let patients set their ownprices for his dental services. Patients got a end basic exam and cleaning and then paidwhat they thought it was worth. Most patients paid close to the regular rate. A few paid very little but had been putting offdental care. The audience for the demo also gets brochures anddrawing entries for free sessions. Wendyʼs client got great exposure to prospects referrals from stores and a mailing list offuture brides and their friends.72. LOW-COST COMPETITORS GOT YOU DOWN?The Guerrillas at Karaʼs Hair Studio were facing new competition from a chain offering supercheap haircuts until they decided to fight back. Karaʼs launched a communicate and newspaper campaignfeaturing victims of bad haircuts wearing bags over their heads.
